Welding

Great Lakes Bay Michigan Works! recruits trainees for the Merrill Institute Jump Start welding program. Welding is a high-demand occupation. Participants will meet local area employers who are ready to hire!

What is Jump Start?

Jump Start is a 6-week, 240-hour training program (40 hours per week in class plus assignments outside of class).

What Will Trainees Learn?

This course provides training in gas metal arc welding (MIG). MIG welding is a process in which an electric arc forms between an electrode and a metal work piece, heating the metals and causing them to melt and be joined.

Upon completion of the course, participants will be able to perform:

  • Minor external repairs to equipment and accessories
  • Setup and perform gas metal arc welding (short circuit transfer and spray transfer) operations, making fillet and groove welds in all positions within a limited thickness range on carbon steel

Requirements

  • GED or high school diploma
  • Must be able to pass basic math and reading skills assessments
  • Must be able to pass an agility test.
  • Must be able to pass a dexterity test.
  • Interview for acceptance into the program

Program Selection

Program slots will be offered to the applicants who best meet the preferred candidate qualifications, which include minimum test scores, work experience, and previous education/training. Class schedules and times will vary.

Application Process

Great Lakes Bay Michigan Works! recruits people for accelerated training, offers career managers to review applications, and provides funding to those who qualify.

  • Applicants must submit application and required documentation to training provider.
  • Training provider selects applicants for the program and conducts the training.
  • A resume must accompany each application, documenting all required skills, experience and test scores. Great Lakes Bay Michigan Works! can help applicants with resume preparation.

I'm interested. What should I do?
