Back in late 2012, Jason Parks was working as a collections agent making half of what he makes today as a chemical process operator. Though he had successfully served as a combat engineer for the United States Army, he continually struggled to find the right career path after leaving active duty. He was perpetually underemployed.
With the support and encouragement of his family, Jason decided to pursue the Chemical Process Fast Start program at Delta College. He came to Great Lakes Bay Michigan Works! looking for guidance on the application process and help with covering the cost of tuition.
Now a gainfully employed chemical process operator at Dow, Jason looks back on the ways Great Lakes Bay Michigan Works! helped him.
- Because of his veteran status and underemployment, Jason qualified for assistance under a Michigan Works! program. Not only did this give him access to individualized job search assistance, it also enabled GLB Michigan Works! to pay for his Fast Start training.
- Jason worked one-on-one with a case manager to develop an effective resume, hone his behavioral interviewing skills, and complete all Fast Start pre-training requirements. He attended the Michigan Works! Academic Center to increase his Work Keys scores and completed the Essential Works Skills program. Once Jason applied to the Fast Start program at Delta College, his application was quickly accepted.
- Job leads are a key part of the services available to anyone at GLB Michigan Works! But for Jason, his relationships with GLB Michigan Works! staff gave him real-time insights into who was hiring and when for chemical process operators.
