When Edrico Garcia first returned home to Michigan in December 2013, he had been recently discharged from the United States Navy after serving six years as an aviation electrician. His time in the military imparted many valuable job skills including outstanding technical and leadership abilities. Still, despite these marketable skills, he struggled to find stable employment in the civilian job market.
Edrico had heard about Fast Start and knew employers were especially interested in people with technical skills for this accelerated retraining program. So, he went to Great Lakes Bay Michigan Works! to learn more.
Edrico worked one-on-one with a case manager to develop an effective resume, sharpen his behavioral interviewing skills, and complete all pre-training requirements for the Chemical Process Fast Start program at Delta College. Most notably, Michigan Works! services helped him increase his Work Keys scores. When he submitted his application to Delta, he was quickly offered a slot in the next available Chemical Process class.
In late May 2014, Edrico successfully completed the 13-week intensive training program and was awarded a certificate of completion. Shortly after completing the program, he was contacted by the Dow Chemical Company to interview for a position available in the Midland plant. In early June, he was offered a full-time position as a chemical process operator with excellent wages and benefits.
